Spoiler-Free Review of Disney’s The Lone Ranger

I admit it.  I went into the theater to see Disney’s The Lone Ranger hoping it would not be as bad as we had all expected it to be.  I guess wishing with all your heart really does pay off. I LOVED this movie!   This movie was funny, heart wrenching, inspiring, sad, exciting and breathtaking all at the same time.  It was a fantastic blend of action, adventure, suspense, friend ship and just a sprinkling of romance.

Armie Hammer as the Lone Ranger was perfect.  His take on the masked hero of the Wild West is wonderful.  This is not the over confident cowboy we all know; this Lone Ranger goes into his destiny kicking, screaming and unwilling to see what is right in front of his face until it is almost too late.

And let us not forget his friend and loyal companion.  Many have said that Johnny Depp’s Tonto was very much like his Captain Jack Sparrow.  Sarcastic and dry witted. They were right and it works so well!  His Tonto’s quirky persistence and fearless approach to life make him the perfect sidekick.

Spoiler-Free Review of Disney's The Lone Ranger

Let me start at the beginning.  This adaptation of The Lone Ranger is told through the eyes of Tonto, a life time or two after the story had been forgotten.  The characters are beautifully written and performed so believably that you will fell their pain and celebrate their joy.  The scenery, shot on location mainly in New Mexico and Utah, is almost too beautiful to believe it is not all CGI.  There is so much to adore about this film but let me give you a few of my favorite highlights.

Entertainment Earth
  • The story has depth.  You see and live the history of those on the screen.  The characters do not just appear before you but are presented to you in a way that makes them feel like old friends.
  • The Spirit Horse.  I admit it.  I am an animal person.  I love animals that can act.  To make it better this beautiful white horse gives Johnny Depp a run for his money on the big screen.
  • Helena Bonham Carter. She so often plays over the top, unbelievable characters that can be hard to take. I normally am not a fan of her work.  As Red, she is still over the top and yet sassy and endearing.  I loved her in this role!
  •  Finally, who can pass up the best railway chase scene since Back to the Future 3!?  Trust me, it is worth it!  This is also the scene when the soundtrack goes from background ambiance to driving the scene.
